Those in the know understand there is much more to Tacoma than an unfortunate aroma and a big, bulbous Dome. Judy Wagonfeld is one in the know. The October issue introduces the inexperienced to ten great reasons to travel to the odiferous city to the south.

1. Point Defiance Park, end of North Pearl St, Tacoma. Open year round. Free, but there is a charge for Zoo & Aquarium. Information at Metro Parks. 253.305.1000. Getting there: I-5 to Route 16/Bremerton. Exit at Pearl Street. Turn left on Sixth Avenue and right onto Pearl Street. Continue to end.

3. Stadium High School and Historic District. A walk and gawk tour a mile northwest of downtown. Begin at the Seymour Conservatory, walking north on "G" Street along Wright Park. Go right on Division, left on Tacoma Ave, right on 1st Street and left to Stadium High School. Exit to the far west side, bearing right on Stadium Way past the old history museum. Turn left at Garfield Park up Borough Road, veering right at the tennis club and right onto Tacoma Avenue to Annie Wright School. Turn left on Yakima from 9th. Wander through the middle of the loop, where "The Hand that Rocks the Cradle" was filmed in one of the mansions. Cross Division and return to Wright Park.

4. W.W. Seymour Botanical Conservatory, 316 S "G" St @ Wright Park, Tacoma. Open 10 a.m.­4:30 p.m. daily except Thanksgiving and Christmas. Free. 253.591.5330.
